Another long standing independent home comfort company has changed hands.

Shipley Energy has acquired the heating oil and HVAC assets of Yeager's Fuel in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The business traces its history back to 1939, when founder Richard Yeager began delivering coal to a local school district.

Over the following decades, Yeager's expanded into:

heating oil,

air conditioning,

heating service,

and full home comfort.

It Became Allentown's Largest Privately Owned Oil Heat Company

Under owner Tony Malandra, who acquired Yeager's in 2001, the company grew into what the transaction adviser describes as the largest privately owned full service oil heat business in Allentown.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Oil Heat Businesses Are Changing

Heating oil contractors occupy an interesting position in the Northeast.

Their traditional fuel business faces pressure from:

heat pump adoption,

volatile fuel prices,

electrification,

and aging equipment.

Many have responded by expanding into HVAC service and equipment installation.

That makes their customer base valuable even as the fuel mix changes.

Shipley Gains Existing Relationships

The real asset is not simply trucks and equipment.

It is decades of customer relationships.

Those households may eventually purchase:

furnaces,

boilers,

heat pumps,

air conditioning,

maintenance,

and other home energy services.

The Takeaway

Yeager's began as a coal delivery business nearly 90 years ago.

It evolved into heating oil and HVAC.

Now it has become part of a larger regional energy company.

The transaction is a good example of how old fuel businesses are being folded into broader home comfort platforms as the residential heating market changes.
