Mechanical contractors are growing.

Their internal systems may not be growing with them.

A new 2026 MEP Innovation Report produced by SMACNA, MCAA, NECA and Bluebeam surveyed 303 contractors across the mechanical and electrical trades. SMACNA highlighted the findings September 23.

The headline result:

Nearly three in four contractors are growing.

But only a small percentage report having fully documented processes.

Growth Creates Operational Pressure

A mechanical contractor can grow revenue faster than it grows operational discipline.

That eventually creates friction in:

Estimating.

Project management.

Fabrication.

Procurement.

Field coordination.

Change orders.

Scheduling.

The report points to workforce pressure and rapidly changing project requirements as two of the biggest barriers to better execution.

Late Design Changes Are Driving Rework

SMACNA says incomplete or late-changing design information can create hidden rework across both fabrication shops and field operations.

For HVAC contractors, that can mean:

Ductwork remakes.

Equipment changes.

Routing conflicts.

Delayed procurement.

Labor overruns.

Compressed schedules.

On large commercial projects, those problems can quickly turn into margin erosion.

Technology Alone Is Not the Solution

The report's framing is important.

The industry does not appear to be suffering primarily from resistance to technology.

The bigger challenge is integrating technology into standardized workflows.

A contractor can buy excellent software.

If estimating, BIM, project management and field teams still work differently from job to job, the technology does not solve the underlying process problem.

PE Takeaway

Operational maturity matters increasingly in contractor valuation.

Two mechanical contractors with identical revenue can be very different businesses if one has:

Standard processes.

Strong project controls.

Reliable data.

Repeatable estimating.

Documented workflows.

That becomes important to buyers evaluating whether a company can scale.

Contractor Takeaway

Growth itself is not the hard part.

The bigger challenge is building an organization capable of handling the added projects, people and complexity without giving the extra revenue back through rework and operational inefficiency.
