Carrier has introduced a new commercial rooftop heat pump built around an even lower-GWP refrigerant.
The new WeatherFlex 50FC is a reversible air-to-air rooftop system using R-454C, an A2L refrigerant with a global warming potential below 150.
The product was reported September 23.
Carrier Is Designing Ahead of Refrigerant Regulation
The WeatherFlex range was developed in anticipation of tighter European F-gas requirements.
Certain commercial self-contained air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment up to 50 kW will face a GWP limit of 150 beginning in 2027.
Carrier therefore designed the new unit below that threshold.
That is significant even for North American OEMs.
Global manufacturers increasingly need product roadmaps capable of navigating multiple refrigerant regimes simultaneously.
Capacity Runs From 22 to 50 kW
The rooftop platform offers approximately:
23–49 kW cooling capacity.
22–50 kW heating capacity.
It uses variable-speed scroll compressors and can operate across outdoor temperatures from approximately -18°C to 50°C.
Controls Are Integrated
The units include controls supporting:
Multi-zone management.
Energy metering.
Remote monitoring.
They can also connect with Carrier's Abound HVAC platform.
That continues the broader OEM trend toward integrating equipment and software.
OEM Takeaway
The refrigerant transition is not stopping at R-454B.
Manufacturers with global product lines are already designing around even lower-GWP thresholds.
Carrier's use of R-454C shows how quickly refrigerant strategy is becoming a core part of commercial HVAC product development.
