The competition to control the contractor lead is becoming an AI competition.
Yelp has launched a new tool called Smart Lead Reply, which automatically responds to and qualifies incoming Request a Quote leads for service professionals. Yelp's Fall 2026 product release

Customers Can Move From Search to Booking Faster
Yelp says roughly 10% of Request a Quote submissions came through Yelp Assistant during the second quarter.
The platform is now expanding scheduling capabilities so customers can move more directly from:
searching,
to requesting a quote,
to qualifying the job,
to scheduling the contractor.
That reduces the number of steps between discovering a contractor and booking work.
The First Response May Now Come From AI
Smart Lead Reply can automatically respond to customer inquiries and gather more information about the job.
For contractors, that could improve response speed.
A homeowner requesting three HVAC quotes at 9 p.m. may receive an immediate answer rather than waiting for the office to open.
But it also means another part of the contractor's customer relationship is being mediated by a technology platform.
Yelp Is Integrating With Contractor Software
The ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro integrations are particularly important.
Instead of Yelp operating separately from contractor software, the platforms can increasingly connect.
That potentially allows customer information and bookings to move from lead source into the contractor's operating system with fewer manual steps.
The Takeaway
HVAC contractors used to compete over who ranked highest in search results.
Now platforms increasingly want to participate in what happens after the click too.
The contractor may still perform the service, but AI platforms are becoming more involved in deciding who gets the lead and how quickly that lead becomes a booked job.
