Cooling equipment normally consumes energy to remove heat.
A new research breakthrough asks a very different question:
What if the unwanted heat itself could power the cooling system?
Researchers at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials have developed an adsorption heat-pump system that can use waste heat at temperatures as low as 40°C, or about 104°F, to generate cooling.
Conventional adsorption cooling systems generally require heat sources above approximately 70°C.
Dropping that requirement to 40°C dramatically expands the amount of waste heat that could potentially be used.
Data Centers Produce Exactly This Kind of Heat
AI data centers consume enormous quantities of electricity.
Almost all of that electricity eventually becomes heat.
Most facilities currently invest substantial additional energy simply to remove that heat from the building.
The Korean system creates the possibility that some low-grade waste heat could instead become an energy input.
Researchers specifically identify data centers, factories and commercial buildings as potential applications.
No Mechanical Refrigerant Compressor
The system combines chemical adsorption with an electrochemical compressor.
Unlike a conventional vapor-compression system, the electrochemical compressor has no moving parts.
That means it can operate with very little noise or vibration.
Researchers say this could make the technology suitable for environments such as hospitals, schools and other noise-sensitive buildings.
Performance Has Improved Dramatically
The redesigned adsorption bed achieved a specific cooling power of 346.5 W/kg, which the researchers say is more than twice the performance achieved by comparable technologies internationally.
A 10-kW prototype has already been built and is undergoing testing.
The system also uses ammonia, a natural refrigerant.
Waste Heat Could Become an Asset
Industrial facilities have traditionally treated low-temperature waste heat as exactly that — waste.
It may not be hot enough to generate useful steam or electricity economically.
But if technology can convert that lower-temperature heat into cooling, its value changes.
A factory could potentially reuse heat produced by one process to provide cooling elsewhere.
A data center could potentially recover some of the heat generated by computing equipment.
This Could Change the Cooling Efficiency Equation
The technology remains in development and is not yet a mainstream commercial HVAC product.
But the concept is important.
Data centers currently have two major problems:
They consume enormous amounts of electricity.
And they produce enormous amounts of heat.
Turning one problem into part of the solution could materially change cooling economics.
The most interesting cooling technology of the future may not simply use less electricity.
It may run on heat that buildings currently throw away.
