The compressor inside a residential heat pump is changing.
And contractors increasingly need to understand more than whether it is single-stage or variable-speed.
ACCA published a technical update August 26 examining how manufacturers are using two-stage, vapor-injection and variable-speed compressor technology as efficiency standards and heat-pump expectations rise.
Fixed-Speed Equipment Has a Limitation
A traditional single-stage compressor essentially has two operating states:
On.
Off.
When running, it delivers close to its full available capacity regardless of whether the home needs maximum output.
Variable-capacity systems operate differently.
They can adjust output closer to the building's actual load.
That Can Improve More Than Efficiency
ACCA highlights several potential advantages:
- More consistent indoor temperature
- Better humidity control
- Reduced energy consumption
- Quieter operation
- Higher efficiency
For homeowners, those differences can be more noticeable than a higher efficiency rating printed on the equipment.
Vapor Injection Adds Another Capability
Enhanced vapor-injection designs can help compressors maintain stronger performance during demanding heating conditions.
That becomes increasingly relevant as heat pumps move into colder U.S. climates where traditional equipment may have struggled at low outdoor temperatures.
Contractors Need Different Skills
A variable-capacity system cannot always be treated like the single-stage unit it replaced.
Proper performance depends on:
Airflow.
Controls.
Thermostat communication.
System configuration.
Duct conditions.
Commissioning.
A technically advanced compressor cannot compensate for a poor installation.
Heat Pumps Are Becoming Systems, Not Boxes
The industry's transition toward variable-capacity equipment means technicians increasingly need to understand how the entire system communicates and responds to load.
That requires more training.
But it can also create differentiation for contractors capable of commissioning the equipment correctly.
The next generation of heat pumps is not simply turning on and off more efficiently. It is continuously deciding how much capacity the house actually needs.
