Trane is trying to make data-center cooling easier to design before contractors ever reach the jobsite.

On August 25, the company introduced what it says are the first system-level data-center thermal-management reference kits available across Autodesk Revit and Autodesk Forma

The goal is to reduce redesign and accelerate deployment of high-density AI facilities.

HVAC Is Moving Earlier Into the Project

Traditionally, mechanical equipment is selected after major parts of the building and infrastructure design are already underway.

That becomes increasingly difficult with AI data centers.

Cooling affects:

  • Building layout
  • Electrical requirements
  • Pipe routing
  • Equipment rooms
  • Roof loads
  • Water infrastructure
  • Redundancy
  • Rack capacity

Thermal management therefore needs to be considered much earlier.

Trane's reference kits allow engineers to work with system-level cooling concepts directly inside software already widely used for building design. 

Redesign Is Expensive at Data-Center Scale

Changing an HVAC design late in a conventional building is painful.

Changing one on a hyperscale AI project can be enormously expensive.

Rack densities and cooling requirements are evolving so quickly that mechanical designs can become outdated before construction even begins.

Standardized reference architectures may help engineers model alternatives earlier and reduce that risk.

Contractors Could See More Standardized Projects

If manufacturers increasingly publish complete system architectures rather than simply equipment specifications, contractors may encounter more repeatable data-center designs.

That could simplify:

  • Estimating
  • Coordination
  • Procurement
  • Prefabrication
  • Commissioning

The larger shift is worth watching.

HVAC manufacturers are no longer waiting to be specified into the building. They are increasingly helping design the building around their cooling systems.
