Industry experts speaking with ACHR News expect CO₂ refrigerant, distributed system architectures and AI-driven controls to become major parts of the next generation of supermarket systems.
For refrigeration contractors, that means the low-GWP transition is about much more than replacing one refrigerant with another.
CO₂ Is Moving Into the Mainstream
R-744, or carbon dioxide, has attracted growing interest because of its extremely low global-warming potential.
But CO₂ systems operate at very different pressures and require technicians to understand equipment and service procedures that may be unfamiliar to those trained primarily on traditional HFC systems.
As supermarkets move toward lower-GWP technology, that expertise becomes more valuable.
Distributed Systems Could Change the Mechanical Room
Traditional supermarket refrigeration often relies on large centralized rack systems serving equipment throughout the store.
Distributed architectures can place smaller systems closer to the loads they serve.
That changes:
- Refrigerant charge
- Piping
- Redundancy
- Installation
- Service access
- Equipment layout
Contractors may therefore be working on systems that are structurally different from the racks they know today.
AI Is Moving Into Controls
Refrigeration systems generate enormous volumes of operating data.
AI-driven controls can potentially use that information to optimize:
- Suction pressure
- Defrost schedules
- Compressor staging
- Energy use
- Temperature stability
- Fault detection
That pushes commercial refrigeration toward more predictive and automated operation.
Technician Training Becomes Critical
The challenge is that all these transitions are happening together.
New refrigerants.
New architectures.
New controls.
New regulatory requirements.
For contractors, staying competitive may require deeper specialization and more manufacturer-specific training.
Supermarket refrigeration is not simply getting a new refrigerant. The entire system architecture is being reconsidered at the same time.
