The AI data-center boom has created enormous opportunities for HVAC.
Now the electrical grid may determine how quickly those opportunities actually reach contractors.
PJM Interconnection is facing a 6.8 GW capacity shortfall for the 2028–29 delivery year, after its latest capacity auction failed to procure enough power to meet its reliability requirement. The grid operator is now pursuing an accelerated procurement process to bring additional generation online.
For HVAC contractors, engineers and manufacturers, this is much more than an electricity-market story.
No Power Means No Cooling Project
PJM operates the grid across 13 states and Washington, D.C., including some of America's most important data-center markets.
AI data centers can require extraordinary amounts of electrical capacity.
But nearly all of that electricity eventually becomes heat.
Every new megawatt of computing therefore creates demand for additional:
- Chillers
- Cooling towers
- Pumps
- Air handlers
- CDUs
- Direct-to-chip cooling
- Controls
- Heat-rejection equipment
If grid capacity delays the data center, it also delays that mechanical package.
Data Centers Are Forcing PJM to Rewrite the Rules
PJM has been developing a new process for very large electricity users, including data centers, as proposed loads grow faster than conventional grid-planning timelines can handle.
Its initial large-load process generated 12 proposals without producing consensus, according to Data Center Knowledge.
The grid operator is now attempting to solve both sides of the problem: how large new loads connect and where enough new generation comes from to serve them.
HVAC’s Biggest Growth Market Has a Dependency
Contractors are hearing enormous numbers around future data-center cooling demand.
Those numbers may be real.
But the cooling industry cannot outrun the electrical infrastructure supporting it indefinitely.
PJM's 6.8 GW shortfall is therefore one of the more important warning signs yet.
AI may be creating the cooling demand, but the grid could determine how quickly HVAC gets the work.
