The AI conversation in distribution is changing.

A September 22 report from Modern Distribution Management shows distributors are increasingly asking where AI creates measurable value, rather than simply which tools are available.

New NAW research found the strongest impact so far in back-office efficiency.

Among respondents measuring impact, 47.4% reported a moderate or significant benefit in back-office operations

AI Is Spreading Across Distribution Workflows

The technologies discussed at the 2026 NAW Innovators Summit included applications in:

Product data.

Field sales.

Shipping.

Order entry.

Returns.

E-commerce search.

Profitability analysis.

Supply-chain planning.

Back-office exception management.

That is important for HVAC distribution.

Many wholesalers still operate complex workflows involving large SKU counts, seasonal inventory and time-sensitive contractor orders.

The Question Is No Longer “Can AI Do This?”

Distributors are beginning to ask:

Will employees use it?

Will it save time?

Will it improve margin?

Will it reduce mistakes?

Will it integrate with existing systems?

Those are much more mature questions than simply experimenting with generative AI.

People Remain the Bottleneck

MDM’s reporting emphasized that adoption remains a people-and-process challenge.

Technology only produces value if:

Employees trust it.

Processes change.

Data is reliable.

Management follows through.

That is especially important in distribution businesses where local branch habits can be deeply established.

Distributor Takeaway

AI is moving past the demonstration stage.

For HVAC wholesalers, the next wave of technology spending will increasingly be judged by whether it improves order flow, inventory decisions, sales productivity and margin — not whether the software sounds impressive.
