The refrigerant transition just gained another option.
ComStar International has introduced RS-20, designated R-480A, as a lower-GWP alternative to R-134a.
The refrigerant has a global warming potential of 291, compared with roughly 1,430 for R-134a.
That represents an approximately 80% reduction.
The Big Difference Is the A1 Rating
Many newer lower-GWP refrigerants fall into the A2L category.
R-480A carries an A1 classification — non-flammable with low toxicity.
That could make it attractive in applications where refrigerant flammability creates additional design or operational concerns.
Existing R-134a Equipment May Be Able to Use It
ComStar says RS-20 can replace R-134a in many existing systems without changing major equipment components.
Existing expansion devices and controls can remain in place, and an oil change is generally not required in a typical conversion where the existing lubricant is compatible.
That is potentially significant for the installed base.
EPA Has Approved Applicable Uses
RS-20 is approved under the EPA’s SNAP program for applicable new-equipment and stationary retrofit applications.
It is also approved for retrofit use in motor-vehicle air conditioning.

Chillers.
Healthcare systems.
Refrigerated transportation.
Other R-134a equipment.
Performance Is Designed to Stay Close
ComStar says the refrigerant was engineered to operate similarly to R-134a.
Under comparable testing, the company reported cooling capacity of approximately 2,545 Btuh for RS-20 versus 2,507 Btuh for R-134a.
Manufacturer claims should still be evaluated against the specific equipment and application.
Contractor Takeaway
The refrigerant transition is becoming less binary.
It is not simply R-134a versus an A2L replacement.
R-480A gives equipment owners and manufacturers another path: much lower GWP while retaining an A1 non-flammable classification.
