One of the HVAC industry's most persistent arguments against heat pumps is being challenged by a simple source of evidence: hourly weather data.

Heat pumps are frequently dismissed in cold climates because temperatures can occasionally fall far below freezing.

But looking at an entire heating season rather than the coldest design temperature produces a very different picture.

Recent analysis by building-performance specialist Nate Adams examined how many hours cities actually spend at temperatures that present serious challenges for heat pumps.

Even in some extremely cold markets, most hours of the year are considerably milder than the design conditions used to size HVAC systems.

Fairbanks Shows Why the Distinction Matters

Fairbanks, Alaska, provides an extreme example.

Adams divided outdoor temperatures into three broad operating categories: relatively easy conditions for heat pumps, temperatures requiring more capable cold-climate equipment, and truly difficult conditions.

His analysis found that even in Fairbanks, approximately 58% of the year fell into the easier range and another 25% into the middle range, leaving about 16% in the most difficult category.

That does not mean every Fairbanks house should immediately replace its furnace with a basic heat pump.

It means the coldest hours of the year should not be mistaken for the entire heating season.

Minneapolis and Cleveland Tell an Even Stronger Story

The pattern becomes more pronounced in less extreme northern cities.

In Cleveland, the analysis found that roughly 91% of the year fell into the easier operating range, with only a small fraction of hours presenting the most challenging conditions.

That helps explain why modern heat pumps can deliver meaningful annual heating even in markets traditionally associated with furnaces.

A system does not necessarily need to carry 100% of the load during the coldest hour of the year to deliver large energy and comfort benefits over thousands of other hours.

Hybrid Heating May Be the Practical Middle Ground

This is where dual-fuel or hybrid systems become especially interesting.

A heat pump can provide heating during mild and moderately cold conditions, while a furnace or other backup system operates when outdoor temperatures fall below an economic or capacity balance point.

That allows homeowners to gain many benefits of heat-pump heating without designing the electric system around the most extreme winter conditions.

It also gives contractors more flexibility.

The conversation no longer needs to be framed as "heat pump versus furnace."

In many climates, the answer may be heat pump plus furnace.

Load Calculations Matter More Than Ever

This trend also puts greater pressure on contractors to properly size equipment.

Rules of thumb become increasingly problematic when system performance varies with outdoor temperature.

Contractors need to understand building heat loss, equipment capacity curves and the temperature at which backup heating becomes necessary.

That is particularly important because modern inverter heat pumps can operate very differently from older single-stage models.

The Myth Is Becoming More Nuanced

It would be equally misleading to claim that cold weather no longer matters.

Very low temperatures still affect capacity and efficiency, and not every building is suitable for full electrification without envelope improvements or electrical upgrades.

But the idea that "heat pumps don't work in cold climates" is becoming increasingly difficult to defend as a universal rule.

The more useful question is:

How many hours each year will this specific house actually need something more?

That is a much better engineering question — and a much better conversation for contractors to have with customers.
