ASHRAE has announced a new direction for future editions of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1. The core standard will continue to focus on commercial building energy efficiency, while ASHRAE develops a separate aligned publication focused on operational greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
For commercial HVAC contractors, this matters because energy efficiency and carbon reduction are increasingly becoming separate but connected conversations in building projects.
Standard 90.1 has long served as a major benchmark for commercial building energy efficiency. ASHRAE says the new direction is part of the 2028 and 2031 six-year work plan, with operational carbon provisions expected to move into separate appendices and eventually a standalone document.
That distinction matters in the field. A commercial HVAC contractor quoting a rooftop unit replacement, central plant upgrade, heat pump conversion, controls retrofit, or ventilation project needs to understand whether the owner is trying to meet an energy code, an emissions target, a utility requirement, or an internal sustainability goal.
Those goals are related, but they are not always the same. A project may reduce energy use, but still raise questions about fuel source, electric demand, carbon intensity, operating cost, or long-term building performance.
For contractors, the practical impact may show up in specifications, commissioning requirements, equipment selections, controls strategies, and retrofit proposals. Contractors who understand how energy and carbon requirements affect HVAC decisions will be better prepared to guide owners and engineers through complex projects.
The change also reflects a larger shift in commercial HVAC. Contractors are no longer only installing equipment. They are increasingly being asked to help buildings perform better, document results, support compliance, and reduce operating costs.
That creates opportunity for contractors with controls expertise, commissioning experience, heat pump knowledge, building automation capability, and the ability to explain lifecycle performance in plain language.
The contractor takeaway is not that Standard 90.1 changes overnight. These are future work-plan changes. But the direction is important. Commercial HVAC contractors should expect energy efficiency, carbon reduction, electrification, and building performance to become more visible in bids and owner conversations.
For contractors, code literacy is becoming a competitive advantage. The firms that can explain what the rules require, what they do not require, and how HVAC choices affect compliance will be more valuable than firms that simply quote equipment.
